We are all familiar with the Christmas message. It is proclaimed to us loud and clear from September. We are encouraged to buy all sorts of goods and gifts, to celebrate and overindulge, to decorate our houses with trees, tinsel and lights. All the time we are reminded that at the centre of the Christmas tradition is Father Christmas with his white beard, and Coco-Cola red coat. This is the predominant Christmas message that our world receives. In mid December Formby received an alterative Christmas message. Members of the Churches in Formby, Altcar and Hightown joined together to stage a Nativity Play in the village centre. There was a light rain that thankfully, stopped just as the play was about to start, Crowds filled the street and watched as the story of the Nativity unfolded. Many people worked long and enthusiastically to make this happen; willingly giving their time, expertise and energy. Walking amongst the watching crowds it was uplifting to see so many happy, smiling faces and to hear them enthusiastically clapping and singing along to the final song. Children in the crowd where visibly enthralled and some were heard to ask their parents to explain what was going on. Adults were delighted to witness the spectacle asking, ‘Will it happen again next year.?’ The answer to this is 'Yes'.The play brought the community together and showed that, given the opportunity Formby was ready and eager to hear the real Christmas message. |
